A Beer Yeast Company and PPRD – what do these things have in common? Dedication to community, highest regard for teamwork, and the love of beer. The Brewing Science Institute (BSI), a beer yeast company in Woodland Park, CO, has been a proud top tier sponsor of Pikes Peak Roller Derby (PPRD) since 2019. BSI sponsorship supports the mission of PPRD; “our mission is to foster athleticism, personal empowerment, and community relationships through playing and promoting the fast-paced, hard-hitting, competitive sport of flat track roller derby.” Not only do the owners and staff regularly attend the PPRD bouts, BSI also employs two skating members of PPRD.

It also provides breweries with contamination testing, and beer brewing yeast brewing products. BSI is dedicated to boosting professional brewers’ knowledge of fermentation, microbiology and fundamentals of brewing technology.
Who is PPRD?
Who is Pikes Peak Roller Derby (PPRD)? It’s a flat track roller derby league in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA, founded in 2005 as the Pikes Peak Derby Dames. PPRD is a
501(c)7 (soon to be 501c3) nonprofit sports organization, and is owned and operated entirely by our members and volunteers. This organization provides an equal opportunity for athletes of all skill levels and abilities to succeed by discovering strengths, overcoming weaknesses, and challenging themselves, both on and off the track.
It’s all about Beer Yeast + Fun!
Okay, what is the tie between BSI and PPRD. The simple answer: fun. Although BSI is about beer yeast, it’s about creating a positive working atmosphere for employees. Certainly, it takes hard work and meticulous biological practices to make quality beer yeast, but we also know how to have fun too. Additionally, the employees, managers and owners all work as a team. Owners are on site daily to help with fixing boilers to pouring beer yeast cultures. Employees enjoy many benefits at BSI. We have ‘homebrews’ for the employees, after work happy hours at all our local surrounding breweries, and we love the fast-paced action of roller derby.
PPRD’s monthly bouts give BSI employees a chance to relax, have a beer, and watch some hard-hitting competition on skates.
